About this DVD

Is it possible for your students to make sound choices today that build financial success later in life?

Not without the proper role model. And that where you – and Financing Your Future – come into play.

Financial Freedom Begins In Your Classroom
If your students are financially secure, they'll lead a more satisfying and fulfilling life. But first they need to take the first step.

With Financing Your Future, you'll use a rich mixture of 5 video segments and 15 in-class activities (3 for each video segment) to give your students a solid grounding in key personal finance concepts. The videos cover 5 key themes:

Get a (Financial) Life – The first video in the series introduces basic vocabulary and key concepts such as wealth building, savings and an important rule - "spend less than you earn".

Get Smart: Decisions Have Consequences – This video covers trade-offs and opportunity costs related to both small decisions, such as what to wear, and big decisions, such as how much time and income should one devote to investing in their own human capital.

Get Banked! The Banking Advantage – This video illustrates how vital it is to have a banking relationship and reveals the surprisingly high costs of being "unbanked", warning of the pitfalls of frequenting pay-day lending and check-cashing establishments.

Get the Credit You Deserve – This video aims to demystify credit and debt, showing that smart credit decision-making can enable one to live a more fulfilling life. Key concepts such as calculating APR and understanding credit scores are discussed in detail.

Get a Financial Plan – The final video in the series stresses the importance of budgeting and planning, saving early and often, vital concepts including compound interest, "paying yourself first," and defines various investing instruments and risk tolerance.

Each video segment is supplemented by 3 lesson plans, helping you extend and reinforce the content covered by that video.

The DVD also includes:

  • Brief summaries of the videos
  • Correlations of the lesson plans to national educational standards in economics, personal finance, and mathematics
  • Glossary of key terms
  • Test bank of questions to assess your students' understanding of the concepts

A companion website, financingyourfuture.ncee.net, includes a workshop leader's guide for teacher professional development workshops and other supplemental materials to give you the flexibility to teach personal finance on your terms.
